Are there too many fashion trends emerging?

Pretty much every imaginable style is represented in somebody's closet: short skirts and long skirts, pencils and pleats, wide pants and skinny jeans, bare and covered-up. When everything's current, what's a revolutionary to revolt against?
Thus, over reliance on fashion trends discredits the very idea of fashion trends. Freed from the dictates of official fashion, people go their own ways and wear what they like.
Which is not a bad thing. But it means that clothing designers and manufacturers and retailers need to find another way to sell their wares. If most shoppers no longer feel obliged to keep up with supposed trends, what do they care about? What do they want? What else is there to sell?
